Winter can take a toll on mental health. Teletherapy can help.

The cold weather and long nights are here. Fortunately, so are virtual mental health resources.

The drab winter weather can do a number on our emotional and mental well-being. The onslaught of this year’s “tripledemic” viruses, along with economic and global unrest, can further exacerbate anxiety, stress and depression. In fact, depression among adults tripled in early 2020—and worsened further still in 2021, according to research by the Boston University School of Public Health.

Virtual mental health counseling can help. According to the American Psychological Association’s 2021 COVID practitioner survey, 96 % of psychologists said that teletherapy was therapeutically effective for patients.

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield (Horizon)  has built – and continues to build – a behavioral health network of more than 8,000 providers who offer a full range of mental health services. The vast majority are equipped to conduct visits virtually, so you can get the help you need from the comfort of your home.

We offer several options to help you find the care you need, when you need it.

  • If you would like to speak to someone who will point you in the right direction—any time day or night—just call Horizon Behavioral Services at 800-626-2212 (TTY 711).
  • You can also visit Horizon’s doctor and hospital finder to search for in-network virtual or in-person care.
  • Horizon CareOnline℠ enables eligible members to speak with licensed psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers via video or phone, 7 days a week between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. You can read each doctor’s profile and patient reviews before selecting one for your care. Access Horizon CareOnline by logging in to our secure member portal at HorizonBlue.com or by downloading the HorizonBlue app. Don’t have the app? Just text GETAPP to 422-272. There is no charge to download the app, but rates from the wireless provider may apply.

Teletherapy is a covered benefit

Virtual mental health is shown to be effective, and many members have taken advantage of these convenient services, especially during the ongoing pandemic. What’s more, teletherapy costs are covered as part of your health plan, with either low or no co-pays, depending on the type of plan you have. To learn more about your benefits and costs, consult your summary of benefits or call the number on the back of your member ID card.

Seeking care is a brave step. Know that we are here to find the care that’s right for you.
