Horizon Foundation and Horizon BCBSNJ employees support disaster relief to Puerto Rico to help victims of Hurricane Maria
The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, the charitable arm of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ), will provide $100,000 in direct grants and a special matching gifts program to help the people of Puerto Rico recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria.
The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey is pledging $100,000 in support of the relief and recovery efforts, making two direct grants of $37,500 each to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army for a total of $75,000. The remaining $25,000 will come through a special employee matching gifts program in which it will pledge $2 of support for every $1 donated by Horizon BCBSNJ employees to any of these four non-profit relief organizations:
- American Red Cross
- The Salvation Army
- Unidos por Puerto Rico at the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (established by Beatriz Rossello, the first lady of Puerto Rico, to enlist private sector help for those affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria)
- ConPRmetidos (an independent, non-partisan, non-profit economic empowerment organization, partnering with the Foundation for Puerto Rico, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing Puerto Rico’s social and economic potential)
"The people of Puerto Rico are suffering in the midst of a humanitarian crisis brought on by the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria," said Robert A. Marino, Horizon BCBSNJ Chairman and CEO and Chairman of The Horizon Foundation Board of Directors. "Even with a large scale relief effort, it will take months and in many cases, years for Puerto Rico to recover from this catastrophic storm, and Horizon is committed to doing what we can to help."
This is the third package of hurricane relief pledged in recent weeks by Horizon and is structured similarly to what has been authorized by The Horizon Foundation to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, bringing the total committed for the three hurricanes to $300,000.
