Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey encourages residents affected by Anthem breach to sign up for free credit protection

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is continuing to encourage all residents impacted by the cyber attack on Anthem Inc. to visit AnthemFacts.com and follow the guidance provided for protecting their personal information after today’s announcement by Anthem Inc. of the number of people affected by state. Anthem will be mailing notices to all New Jersey residents, including Horizon BCBSNJ members, affected by the breach."Our top concern is providing information on how our members affected by the Anthem cyber-attack can protect themselves," said Thomas Rubino, director of public affairs of Horizon BCBSNJ. "We are encouraging our members who have received care or live in Anthem service areas to visit AnthemFacts.com, even before they receive a notice, to determine whether they should sign up for two years of free credit protection services."The information provided by Anthem indicates that approximately 210,000 Horizon BCBSNJ members, who reside in New Jersey, were impacted by the breach of Anthem’s IT systems. The Social Security numbers of approximately 200 of those Horizon BCBSNJ members, or .1%, were affected. The Horizon BCBSNJ members affected by the breach sought medical care in Anthem service areas, and the treating doctors and hospitals would have submitted claims with member data to Anthem. It is this member data that was breached in the cyber attack, and according to Anthem does not include credit card, banking, or confidential health information.Anthem and Horizon BCBSNJ are separate and distinct companies.
