Driving change in behavioral health care to make New Jersey healthier

The connections between mental and physical health are undeniable – each has the potential to impact the other. That’s why Horizon is investing in new programs, partnerships and technologies that deliver an integrated approach to overall health for both body and mind. Here are 10 ways Horizon is transforming mental health care to make it work better for you:
Easy-to-find answers and services. No two Horizon members have the same needs. Horizon Behavioral Health is a dedicated website that makes it easier for you to get the information you want and the support you need.
A personal approach to your needs. Horizon’s Behavioral Health Care Navigator program offers you dedicated clinicians who understand you. They will help guide you every step of the way from understanding your diagnosis and finding the right resources for care to coordinating your doctors and getting the most from your benefits.
Integrated care for whole-person health. This first-of-its-kind Integrated System of Care (ISC) program partners with community-based mental health agencies to coordinate care and services. These “healthcare quarterbacks” make whole-person care easier by ensuring that our members get high-quality treatment for their physical and mental health needs.
Confronting racial and ethnic mental health disparities. Supporting the mental health of Black New Jerseyans and helping Black women avoid post-partum depression are just two of the ways we’re acting to tackle racial and ethnic health disparities.
Specialized assistance. Horizon is offering members access to services tailored help to first responders, individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, autism and bipolar disorder.
One-on-one help. Horizon helps its members simultaneously manage both physical and behavioral health challenges through its Case Managers Program. We’re making personalized help available to members who have a behavioral health condition, such as depression, coupled with a serious or chronic medical condition, such as diabetes.
Helping employers make mental health a priority. More than half our members get their health insurance through their employer. That’s why we’re giving employers the information and tools they need to support employee mental and physical health.
Easier access to evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders (SUD). Recovery from SUD can be hard, but we’re making it easier to start, and stay on, the road to recovery. To help members find high-quality treatment options that can lead to lasting recovery for substance use disorders, Horizon has partnered with the State and a leading non-profit to fund a free, searchable resource: the Addiction Treatment Locator, Assessment, and Standards platform (ATLAS).
Expanding access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Evidence-based MAT combine approved medications, such as buprenorphine/naloxone and naltrexone, with behavioral therapy. Multiple Horizon providers now not only provide MAT but do so virtually, so members can get the care they need safely and more conveniently.
Investing in mentally healthier communities. Healthier individuals start with healthier communities. That’s why we’re funding Mental Health First Aid Training programs across the State and sponsoring town hall community discussions with the Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey.
